Futurism was an early import of the avant-garde to Japan and Kanbara Tai had started to correspond with Marinetti while he was still in his teens, during the first world war. This is the first appearance of POUPEES ELECTRIQUES in Japan, and it includes critical essays, as well as the translation, itself. Kanbara, as painter and critic, would go on to become a very important pioneer of the Japanese avant-garde.
